Family Life and Deep Roots in Apache County
Many people who've lived in or visited Apache County recognize the familiar red and yellow Whiting Brothers gas station signs
that dot Route 66 and the southwest. My great grandfather helped create these friendly stops along Route 66 and my grandfather kept
them going. I am a lifelong resident of Apache County. My father's side of the family (the Whitings)
and my mother’s side (the Udalls) have been living in Apache County for five generations.
My friends, colleagues and family in the St. Johns community know me by my middle name, “By.” I was born and raised
in St. Johns, which is the county seat, but I've also lived as far north as Window Rock and St. Michaels when I was working for the Navajo
Nation Supreme Court. I enjoy living in Apache County and have a deep respect for its varied cultures and people.
My wife, Joy Whiting, is my best friend and greatest support. Without her love and kindness, my life would not be complete. Joy is a
public school teacher in Apache Country. She is currently teaching Junior High School. Joy Whiting is a former college basketball player who
volunteers her time by coaching little league soccer and basketball.
My best “little” friend is my daughter. We love to spend time together playing sports, "wrestling," and riding
motorcycles. We recently took a 1,000 mile motorcycle trip through Colorado and the Navajo Nation. Our latest venture is building
a tree house.
My parents, Ken Whiting and Karma Udall Whiting, are my inspiration. My dad works for the engineering department at Salt River Project
in St. Johns. My mother is an elementary school teacher in Apache County. They are high school sweethearts and lifelong residents of Apache
County.
