Gourd Dancing
June 20, 2008
This is a picture of a Gourd Dance. This dance occurred on the Castillo Mountains near Tecc Nos Pos, AZ. Pictured are Lorenzo Jim, Michael Whiting and Raymond Redhouse among others. This particular Dance was performed in honor of Major Montoya who is serving our county as a United States Marine.
During this dance the “Flag Song” was honorable sung by Irvin and his great band of drummers. The Gourd Dance is a very religious experience with many songs and prayers being sung and prayed. There are various Gourd Dancing societies across the Navajo Nation and inclusion through induction is generally required. I want to thank Navajo Nation Council Delegate Francis Redhouse for being the Master of Ceremonies and Harry and Gary Clark for their kindness. I also want to thank my wife who made a beautiful “Gourd Blanket”, which was presented to Raymond Redhouse in honor of his fatherhood to his many sons and the Teec community. Thank you BIH-KEH-HES and SHIMAS.
