Meth in Montana

Date April 28, 2008

The largest advertising in Montana is “The Meth Project,” which reaches 70-90% of teens three times a week. This is saturation-level advertising that appears on television, radio, the Internet and billboards.

The 30-second TV ads are posted online. You can view them here (link opens in a new window):

Candelaria in trouble again?

Date April 15, 2008

Based on his recent comments to the White Mountain Independent Criss Candelaria is already worried he won’t be re-elected. As you may know Michael B. Whiting is running against him for Apache county attorney. In response to the Board of Supervisors not approving the hiring of an attorney Candelaria wanted to hire, last week, he went out of his way to try and disparage Michael Whiting in the paper.

This seems to be the course of action Candelaria intends to take until the election on September 2nd, 2008. Mr. Whiting has chosen not to talk about Candelaria in a negative way, even though Whiting had nothing to do with the decision. When asked about Mr. Candelaria’s colorful past Mr. Whiting simply indicated the voters of this county know Criss Candelaria and the kind of person he is, as they read about his unfortunate decisions in the newspaper every few months.

True to form, it appears Candelaria may make the paper again for an incident, which occurred at the Concho County Club last week. It seems the Sheriff’s office was called to the Concho County Club in response to a situation involving Mr. Candelaria. No charges have been filed to date, but criminal charges may be forth coming against Candelaria. This is not be the first time Mr. Candelaria has been charged with a criminal offense. When asked about this incident and the possible criminal charges facing Candelaria, Mr. Whiting simply stated people have to be held accountable for their actions. If Candelaria did not violate the law then he should not be charged, if on the other hand he violated the law then he should be charged regardless of his position.

The Chinle Rodeo - a Family Affair

Date April 7, 2008

Last week my family and I attended the Central Navajo Rodeo Association’s (CNRA) first rodeo of the year. One of the rodeo’s major sponsors was the campaign to elect Michael B. Whiting for Apache County Attorney. Wow, what a great rodeo.
There were over 500 hundred people in attendance at the rodeo on both Saturday and Sunday. Frankie Begay, CNRA’s president, attended the rodeo and did a great job managing everything. Shirley Leonard conducted the raffle and her sister managed the concessions. I was surprised by the number of participants in all events, especially the bull riders with over 18 cowboys testing their skills. The wind was really blowing on Sunday, but that did not keep these cowboys and cowgirls from turning in some fast times and great rides.

After the rodeo on Saturday night we danced the night away to the music of “Aces Wild”. What a great band and the Silverdome in Lukachukai allowed everyone to 2-step to the beat. My thanks goes out the CNRA and Shirley Leonard for a wonderful weekend. See you on the rodeo circuit. The road to the International Indian Finals Rodeo begins with the CNRA. www.votewhiting.com

Response to Rick Scott

Date April 7, 2008

Rick thank you for your post. Actions speak louder than words, which is why my opposition to the new strict zoning ordinances being proposed in Apache County says I am not from the “Good Ole Boys Club”. As you probably know private property in Apache County makes up only 13% of the entire county (most people are surprised to learn this fact). Respect for private property rights, next to life and liberty, is what keeps a society “free”. When people own property they are very concerned about the actions of their government. This helps create and accountable and involved electorate.
Forget the “Good Ole Boys Club”, because stifling people’s property rights is not only detrimental to a concerned citizenry, it also violates their property rights. This is the main reason I oppose new strict ordinances until they can be studied for legality and approved by a MAJORITY of the people, not a few.
I hope this one example helps you realize I am not concerned about some certain group with an agenda, but about the “regular people” of this county. Leadership is not doing what is easy, but what is right.

A Note for Republicans and Independents

Date March 16, 2008

Republican party iconThe Apache County primary elections will take place on September 2, 2008. Apache County is primarily Democrat and very few, if any, Republicans are running for office. What does this mean? If you want to vote for most of the elected positions  listed below you must be registed as a Democrat or Independent.

Examples of county officials who you can select in the September 2, 2008, Democratic party primary include:

* County Attorney

* County Treasurer

* County Recorder

* County Assesor

* County School Superintendent

MAKE YOUR VOTE COUNT

If you want to see Michael “By” Whiting, rather than Criss Candelaria, as Apache County’s Attorney, you can vote in the Democrat primary on September 2, 2008, but only if you are registred as a Democrat or an Independent.

REGISTER TO VOTE OR CHANGE YOUR PARTY

Voter registration closes at midnight, August 4. If you need to register to vote, visit Arizona’s EZvoter Online Registration service today. (Link opens in a new window).

EARLY BALLOTS

For the September Primary Election, a voter who requests an early ballot and is affiliated with a recognized party will receive that party’s ballot. If a voter is with a party that is not recognized and requests an early ballot, they must state the party ballot they are requesting (i.e. a voter who is Independent may request a Democratic ballot). Ballots are not automatically sent to a voter unless some type of request is received by the county recorder’s office.

YOUR VOTE CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE

The bottom line is that regardless of your party affiliation, if you do not vote in the primary election process, your preferred candidate might be eliminated as a candidate appearing on the ballot in the general election.
